Goshen Service Weekend

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Just got back from Service Weekend (my first in fact) and everything (on our end) went off without a hitch. Sure, there were a few minor ones, like Lisa getting lost on the reservation in the dark while driving in Friday night and me forgetting where I put my OA sash in my duffel bag (I borrowed my son’s for the weekend). And despite the heat and humidity (101.8 degrees heat index) we only had 3 minor cases of heat exhaustion - and I was not one of them :)

We almost found the new high power range on Saturday but ran out of time because we had to respond to a stranded staff pick up call - and when we got there they had left. By then it was too late to go back and finish looking. We’re pretty sure we found the access road though - its roughly across from Marriott’s main entrance, just to the right a little ways (i.e. take a right out of Marriott’s parking lot and you’ll see the road cut on the left side).

I got to talk on the radios too, and all the ham radio folks said I did a pretty good job for an unlicensed rookie. I just need to take the course with Crew 80 this winter.

Phil’s prom weekend went well so I hear, despite the limo driving being a jerk when he dropped them off at the wrong hotel and would not come back for them. I still think Phil looks silly in the white hat though.

More later!

Missed a few good highlights

Since my last post. I meant to write, but always got side tracked.

First, our Crew camp out at Big Mac was fantastic. Among all the cool things that happened, Judi and & finished our TC qualifications. So our paperwork should be going through the NRA mill as I write this. Soon we’ll be full training councilors! You can see photos of the camp out over at the crew web site. We ran 4 new crew members through pistol class.

Second, the BB Gun RSO course went off without a hitch. Okay, one minor one. We did not have copies of the shooting sports guide and the cards arrived late, but other than that it was great. We’ll just need to make sure we schedule the full 4 hours next time; we’d like to spend more time on the actual range set up and practice. But for a first run of the material there were only a few comments - and most of them came from me as I noticed things that could be added or clarified.

Heading out to Service weekend in a few days. Phil’s prom is this weekend, graduation next weekend. Hard to believe he’ll be graduating soon. Seems like only last week he was a freshman. He’s turned out to be a pretty responsible young man, and I’m very proud of him.

More soon!
