Klondike Derby

Sky Meadows State Park, VA

We got a late start because it took us a while to get the third derby sled tied down to Scott’s car roof. This was also the first time I took the tailgate off the truck.

Temps started in the low 50’s, but it started to drop by the time we got to Sky Meadows. By the time camp was set up it was in the mid 40’s and rain/sleet was starting to come down pretty hard. There was a high wind advisory for the day, calling for gusts to 50 mph. The temp continued to drop till it got to the mid 30’s. While we were making lunch and coffee a tree (a really tall one) fell down close to camp. We also lost two tents to the wind. They were ripped beyond repair. It was at that point that we cancelled the outing for safety reasons. We packed up camp pretty quick and went home.

Sunday at 2pm we met at the Scout Hut to dry gear and repack. We’ll look to reschedule the derby.

February Update: We still have not had the derby. No real snow. The one day we tried to reschedule as a day outing everyone forgot about it, so we had to cancel that too. We may not get to the derby this year.

The few pictures I managed to take are here.

Welcome to 2006

What am I doing? I’ve started this blog to document my time spent as an Assistant Scoutmaster. I’ve been an ASM for a little over two years now. As our Troop’s Camping MB Councilor I encourage our boys to keep some sort of camping journal - or at the very least a log of dates and locations. So, to be a good example I started keeping one too.

It started as a little database on my Palm T5. That worked great for short weekend campouts. But when we started doing week long treks, that didn’t work so well. So I started writing in a small note book, and have kept doing it ever since.

I transcribed our Lenhok’Sin summer trek into a Word doc, and the boys and parents enjoyed reading it. So I thought I’d go a step further and start my own blog. I hope you enjoy reading over my shoulder :)
